Ok.I just heard yesterday that the BIRD FLU(science) PROJ will be in the answer format. So..,I have to kinda redo it.with questions this time.;D But they actually said do an article so, i'll do both i guess.(actually,its just copy + paste:3)

1) Give an introduction on the bird flu e.g how it was discovered, its effects on us till now etc.
AVIAN FLU AND ITS THREATS
Answer:Avian influenza is an infectious diesease caused by bird flu viruses. These viruses occur naturally among birds. The man who discovered the bird flu threat was Dr. Rob Webster of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.He first discovered that human flu is related to bird flu in 1957, but few paid attention to what he saw as a great danger. But when bird flu first infected humans in Hong Kong in 1997,Webster's ideas got a lot of attention.On his advice, the government there killed all the chickens and stopped the outbreak. But since then, Webster has identified the virus in migrating birds. But up till now,bird flu is still affecting us.

2) Give a clear logical explanation why the bird flu cannot be easily spread to humans.
Answer:H5N1 settles in cells deep within the lungs. If the virus needs to settle deep down in the lungs before making someone ill,he or she need to be in an environment where lots of them are around him or her. Huge clusters of H5N1 viruses need to be around that person for some of them to have a chance of getting way deep down into his or her lungs. Basically,that person has to surround him or herself with lots of sick birds and stay very close to them for a long time to catch the diesease. But if someone has the bird flu and sneeezes,hardly any viruses will be sent out because they are deep down in that person's lungs.

3) Explain how some people still suffered from the infections by the H5N1 virus.
Answer:Why some people still suffered from H5N1 is mainly because they had direct or close contact with H5N1-infected poultry or H5N1-contaminated surfaces like secretions or excretions from infected birds.Materials such as water or feed that have been contaminated with the virus also causes humans to suffer from H5N1

4) Suggest why isolating patients is an effective first line defense against the spread of such diseases.
Answer:Isolating Patients is an effective first line defence against the spread of such diesease as by isolating the patient,the diesease would be confined to that room and would not spread to others, causing them to be infectied. By doing so, the number of infected cases would not rise.

Earthquake in Peru

The 2007 Peru earthquake was an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the moment magnitude scale that hit the central coast of Peru on Wednesday August 15, 2007. It lasted for about three minutes.The epicenter was located at 150 kilometres south-southeast of Lima at a depth of 39 kilometres.

There were 519 confirmed dead and 1,366 injured.58,581 houses were destroyed, 13,585 houses were affected,103 were hospitals affected and 14 hospitals were destroyed according to Peruvian Government preliminary assessments.

The Government of Peru led the response to the earthquake through the National Civil Defence System. It was supported by the military, the private sector (local, national and international) and by contributions from civil society and the international community, including governments, international NGOs and UN agencies. They searched for survivors, evacuated the injured, removed rubble, ensured security and meeting the needs of affected people. Shelter was provided for those that had lost their homes, toilets were installed, clean water and medical services were established, food aid was distributed and education was offered, especially to children. A Consolidated Appeals Process in the wake of the earthquake raised approximately $37 million, $9.5m of which was provided by the Central Emergency Response Fund. Despite the considerable relief effort, the initial response was chaotic, marked by a lack of coordination and inadequate information on the needs of people on the ground.

This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates, which are converging at a rate of 78 mm per year. The earthquake occurred as thrust faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the South American Plate moving up and seaward over the Nazca Plate.

An announcement could be broadcast and published for weeks ahead of time that on a specified Sunday afternoon at a specified time there might be an earthquake. People should be outside their homes with their fire extinguishers handy and their utilities shut off. Drivers should pull off the road and boats should be moved into open water. Hospitals and fire departments should be prepared. There should also be an earthquake drill. So that the citizens would know what to do when a real Earthquake occur.

But since then, Webster has identified the virus in migrating birds. Bird Flu affected us and still is affecting us. The lastest case so far is in Egypt. On 17th Febuary the Egypt government announced 2 cases of avian influenza infection.

The first case is a 32 year-old male from Ashmon district in Menofya Governorate. He developed symptoms on 6 February and was hospitalized on 8 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a stable condition.

The second case is a 29 year-old pregnant female from Elsadat District, Menofya Governorate. She developed symptoms on 6 February and was hospitalized on 12 February, where she received oseltamivir treatment. She died on 13 February
